5o5's at the SDYC Hot Rum
Bill Jenkins - November 10, 2002
Greetings 505ers,
Taz, 7152, and Weasel all made it out onto the Hot Rum race course today
(11/10). Those of us who were monitoring the weather predictions last week were
hoping that up to 15 knots might fill in behind the big storm that was passing
through. Instead we were treated to a generous 8 knot breeze that was barely
sufficient to get us around the course.
Weasel and 7152 started at the pin end at 28 minutes after the first gun. Taz
dropped in from the weather end slightly later. The beat out to the first mark
was brutal with the combined onslaught of wind shifts, kelp, and gas from lead
miners. But other than that, it was a beautiful day. Lots of sun, and lots of
poor, deluded, lead poisoned friends to greet.
Congratulations go to Mike Jue and Marc Winger on 7152 for rounding all four of
the marks of the course. Team Weasel rounded two, and new-comer Bryce survivded
the three mile beat to the first mark before retiring in the face of the truly
massive kelp onslaught.
Following the hot rum fest at SDYC, the day was capped off by a burger burn at
casa Jenkins. Even Geoff Nelson, accompanied by his best bird Helen Burdett, was
able to sneak a few minutes from work to eat a little meat.
In all, I'd say it was the kind of day that makes sailing a great way of life!
